I live in the DC metro area and I’m a reader, writer, gardener, and runner. I’m also a homeschool mom of four kids, ages 9, 6, 4, and 2. I love, love, love being home with my kids and getting to watch them learn and explore and develop. I love all the time we have together to make memories. It’s a pretty great life.
But guess what? Sometimes I need a friggin’ break! Sometimes I need to take a breather, get away, and give myself permission to take care of myself a little bit. And I’m not talking about a mom’s night out. I’m talking about a mom’s FLIGHT out!
That’s right, I like to travel without my kids. I love it, actually. I mean, I like to travel with them sometimes, too. But other times, I just want to go far, far away to a new city and see the sights and drink in the energy…without strollers, sippy cups, and all. that. whining.
I even like to travel without my husband. Like, I like it a lot. And that’s not because I don’t like him. On the contrary, I adore him quite intensely. It’s just that there’s something about being in a new city all by myself that makes me feel alive. I’m nobody’s mom or cook or wife. I’m just me. And my mind is free to mingle with the place, its history, and its people. It rejuvenates me. It’s a reclaiming of my self, which is so easily lost in the day-to-day hustle of being a mom.
Of course, being a mom and having all these lovely responsibilities, I can’t always travel as much as I’d like to. But don’t worry, I have ways of satisfying wanderlust without ever leaving home. I call those things “flights of fancy.” (Because I like to pretend I’m clever.)
Join me on my flights out, literal and fanciful, and be inspired to take your own solo mom vacations!
My family: Huge. Husband, four kids, Jack the dog, Stella the guinea pig, and all the plants in my garden.
Love To Shop At: Costco, Target, and Wegman’s. That includes clothing for all of us, even me. That says pretty much all you need to know about me.
Starbucks Order: Raspberry mocha, yes to whipped cream.
Passions: Travel (obviously), reading, writing, gardening, and butter.
Things I’m learning about: lots of technical website stuff (ugh), wine (there’s so much to know!), photography
What’s on my Playlist: Hamilton (duh), the Moana soundtrack, the Foreverly album by Norah Jones and Billy Joe Armstrong, and Chargaux (my new obsession).
Likes: Modern Family, birds and flowers (because deep down I’m an old lady), the beach, musical theater, karaoke, and family dance parties (I even bought us a disco ball).
Dislikes: Wind, fantasy/sci fi, the patriarchy.
Where I grew up: The suburbs of Salt Lake City, Utah. I miss my beautiful mountains.
Where I live now: The suburbs of Washington, DC. (Would love to get out of the burbs one of these days.)
Where I’d love to live: Italy! But I’ll settle for any number of places in Europe (mainly because I can then fly to Italy for under $100).
These are my babies. <3
